TikTok Provides Viewers Authority to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Their Feeds

The platform is rolling out a updated setting that allows them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the service disclosed that it currently hosts in excess of 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is being tested over the coming weeks before a widespread release. This shift comes amid a rise in AI content, driven by new AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

Studies have shown that nearly a tenth of the fastest-growing content creators on a popular video site only show content made by AI. A large amount of this content is considered low-quality AI content, a label for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is often illogical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content created using AI tools, including AI artwork to science explainers, and we aim to give people the option to see more or less of that, according to their own preferences,” stated a company executive.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok disclosed that there are now 1.3bn videos on its service labeled as artificially created. Overall, over 100 mn pieces of content are uploaded to the service every day, making AI-generated material a limited portion of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Members will be able to reduce or increase the volume of AI content they view by opening the “manage topic” feature in the app and selecting the AI content topic. Other topics that can already be controlled under the tool include current affairs, style, beauty, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its guidelines oblige creators to identify lifelike AI-generated content, and it bans dangerous fake videos of public figures or crisis events. Any believable AI video that is without a tag can be deleted under its terms of service.

In addition, the app will henceforth apply an AI-generated watermark to content created with its own AI tools, or flagged by an cross-platform project for spotting artificial media. This step is aimed to deter users from attempting to evade the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is additionally introducing a $2m AI literacy fund for specialists and institutions to create educational content about ethical AI use. This initiative will support educational bodies dedicated to teaching computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has justified its content review process, following controversy over plans to lay off hundreds of safety staff in the UK. It is expected to reduce 439 jobs in its content moderation department in London, with trade unions and digital protection specialists expressing worry that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.

A company official clarified that people-led review would still have a role, but AI can protect employees by removing the most graphic content prior to it gets reviewed by humans. TikTok announced a notable drop in shocking and graphic content reviewed by human moderators over the previous year due to the use of its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
