A Pair of Individuals Arrested Over Phone Hidden in Commons to Reportedly Broadcast Inappropriate Sounds During Prime Minister's Questions

Police have arrested a duo of individuals in connection with a mobile phone discovered hidden within the parliamentary chamber, which was reportedly intended to play sex noises during the weekly parliamentary session.

Discovery and Investigation

This phone was uncovered close to the frontbench during a standard security check of the hall. It is believed it was meant to interrupt the keynote weekly showdown between Keir Starmer and Kemi Badenoch in September.

A police representative commented, “At 10.25 on that specific date, a mobile phone was found during a routine search of the House of Commons chamber.”

Detentions and Charges

Enquiries led officers to believe that the device was purposely positioned in a location with the intention of creating interference to business in the chamber.

  • An individual in his 30s was detained on that Friday on suspicion of attempting to deliberately cause a public nuisance.
  • Another man in his 60s was taken into custody on Tuesday 30 September on allegations of the identical charge.
  • Both have been bailed to return at a later date.

Security Measures and Consequences

Increased security measures were introduced in the Commons after the device was discovered. Audio tours and escorted visits were cancelled, and there was limited entry to the Commons chamber.

The upper house took the same decision to limit entry to the their debating area “for safety reasons.”

Officials added, “Investigations remain ongoing, and we are updating the speaker and clerk informed with our investigation.”

Gravity of the Event

This incident is being treated seriously as it constitutes a major breach of parliamentary security. The phone was located while hundreds security staff based in the parliamentary area were on industrial action over wages and terms.

Consequently, the public were prohibited from the parliamentary estate. The union stated that the work stoppage went ahead due to reduction of annual leave entitlements, unchanged salaries, and an ethnicity pay gap.
